14th November 2006

No log yesterday (Monday), kinda had a late night and didn't feel much like writing.  Monday evening we went for a walk around the resort as we hadn't ventured much off the boat.  We found a hotel bar right on the beach, so had some snacks and a few drinks (happy hour is 2 for one here!).  On the way back to the boat, we ran into Dan and Tom (Persistence) having a coupla drinks themselves.  Anyway, I ended up hanging out with those guys, while Janet went for a late swim.  Thinking she would be able to find us at the bar inside (as the outside one closed while she was gone), I had a few margaritas with some timeshare folks, vacation folks, and Dan and Tom.  Unfortunately Janet didn't join us as she couldn't find us (there were several other bars and restaurants right there, which I hadn't realized), so next time I'll be making sure I get back to the boat and let her know where the party is!

While hanging out with Dan and Tom, they mentioned that they were going to Opequimar to have Persistence hauled out, inspected, and have a copper lightning plate installed (Tom is thinking of sailing to Florida, and I guess boat-lightning strikes are fairly common there).  They invited Janet and I along for the ride (and a couple of timeshare folks we met that night - Darryl and Judy).  We jumped at the chance to see the haul-out process (something we're going to try to do when Ben is here).  We joined them on their boat about 11:30am (Tuesday now) for the ride over.  It took about an hour from dock to dock under power - no wind :(

Once there, we met up with the surveyor, John, and he remembers Whisper and was very very positive about her - always nice to hear!  I won't go into the whole process (we have pictures that will go up someday), but I helped Tom keep anything on the boat from banging into anything on the lift, while Dan and Janet went for tacos (and brought plenty back for us!).  I picked Tom's brain quite a bit more about pretty much everything.  They have to stay overnight, so Janet and I went shopping nearby and cabbed it home.

I almost forgot, but we saw a boat burn up at Opequimar!  We don't really know what happened, but we looked over and saw this thick black smoke.  Everyone ran over and we saw this 20' powerboat being consumed by the flames.  Fortunately, someone had cut it loose from the dock (to prevent the dock and/or other boats from catching on fire) and it just floated for awhile.  Eventually a coupla boats got out to it with fire extinguishers, but it was way way too late.  Then even later the bombaderos (firemen) showed up and they finally got some water on it and put it out, but it was already burned almost down to the waterline.  Quite exciting and scary seeing how fast fiberglass burns. . .

It's been a long day and not much work done on the boat, so we're going to sleep and try to get an early start tomorrow!
